Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi and neighboring Rwandan President Paul Kagame met in Qatar today for their first direct talks since Rwandan-backed M23 rebels escalated violence and seized two major cities in mineral-rich eastern Congo earlier this year.
At a meeting between Tshisekedi and Kagame to discuss the rebellion and mediated by Qatar, both Congo and Rwanda reaffirmed their commitment to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, the three governments said in a joint statement.
The summit came after a previous attempt to meet the Congolese government and M23 leaders to negotiate a ceasefire today failed.
