US President's national security adviser Mike Walz said today that the US could ask Russia to release, as he said, illegally deported Ukrainian children "as part of building trust".
He said this in an interview with CBS News, answering a question about why the US State Department stopped funding a Yale University program that helps find kidnapped Ukrainian children.
Walz said that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is conducting a review of all these programs and that he "cannot speak specifically about this program."
"President (US Donald) Trump spoke with both leaders about the prisoner exchange. The Russians and Ukrainians immediately exchanged almost 200 prisoners after the talks. He also discussed the future of these children. This is certainly one of the key steps to building trust," said a Trump adviser.
When asked whether the US would demand the release of these children as a step towards building trust, Waltz replied in the affirmative.
"We are discussing a number of confidence-building measures. This is one of them," he said, as reported by Tanjug.
