More than 1.100 protesters have been arrested in Turkey since the start of a wave of protests sparked by the detention of a leading opposition figure, Istanbul's opposition mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, on Wednesday, authorities said.
Public gatherings have been temporarily banned in three major cities in the country, AFP reports.
"1.133 suspects were arrested in connection with illegal activities from Wednesday to Sunday," Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya wrote on the social media platform X.
The Turkish Human Rights Association announced today that ten Turkish journalists were arrested in Istanbul and Izmir in their homes, including an Agence France-Presse photographer.
These arrests of journalists came a day after renewed protests over the detention of the mayor of Istanbul on corruption charges.
