Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appointed former Navy Commander Eli Sharvit as director of the Israeli internal security service (Shin Bet), the prime minister's office announced today.
"After conducting extensive interviews with seven qualified candidates, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to appoint former Navy Commander Admiral Eli Sharvit as the next director of the Shin Bet," the statement said.
The Supreme Court recently suspended the dismissal of the current Shin Bet chief, Ronen Bar, while it considers appeals against the government's decision until April 8.
The government, one of the most right-wing governments in Israeli history, announced on March 20 the dismissal of Bar, whom Netanyahu claims he no longer trusts, as thousands of Israelis demonstrated in Jerusalem against his dismissal.
Five appeals were filed against the government's decision.
