The administration of US President Donald Trump has said it is "concerned" about the idea of banning political candidates from political life.
The State Department's statement came in response to the five-year ban imposed in France on the leader of the country's far-right, Marine Le Pen.
"The exclusion of individuals from the political process is particularly concerning given the aggressive and corrupt legal war being waged against President Donald Trump here in the United States," State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce told reporters.
