United States President Donald Trump has threatened to increase tariffs on Chinese goods by an additional 50 percent starting April 9 if China does not withdraw its 34 percent (retaliatory) tariffs by Tuesday.
Previously, on April 2, the US imposed a 34 percent tariff on goods imported from China.
This means that the total tariff on goods imported from China would be 84 percent.
Trump, according to the Guardian, said that "all negotiations with China regarding their requests for meetings with us will be terminated."
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote:
"Yesterday, China imposed retaliatory tariffs of 34 percent, on top of its already record high tariffs, non-financial barriers, illegal subsidies to businesses, and massive long-term currency manipulation, despite my warning that any country that retaliates against the United States of America (US) by imposing additional tariffs - on top of the already long-standing tariff exploitation of our country - will immediately be faced with new and substantially higher tariffs, on top of those originally imposed. Therefore, unless China withdraws its 34 percent increase on top of their already long-standing trade abuses by tomorrow, April 8, 2025, the United States of America will impose additional tariffs on China of 50 percent, effective April 9. In addition, all discussions with China regarding their requests to meet with us will be terminated. Negotiations with other countries, which have also requested meetings, will begin immediately. Thank you for your attention," Trump wrote on his Platform.
