Chinese authorities today promised "firm and vigorous" measures to defend their interests after new US tariffs on Chinese goods came into effect.
Tariffs on goods entering the US from several countries, after a new increase last weekend, rose again today.
Chinese products, which are primarily targeted, are subject to additional tariffs of 104 percent.
An unnamed spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry today invoked the "inalienable and legitimate right of the Chinese people to development."
"We will continue to take firm and vigorous measures to protect our legitimate rights and interests," he added.
China's Ministry of Commerce confirmed today its "firm will" to respond to Washington's trade war, the Xinhua news agency reported.
"China will resolutely take countermeasures and fight to the end if the US insists on continuing to tighten restrictive economic and trade measures," the ministry said.
