A US citizen hijacked a small Tropic Air plane in Belize today, threatened three passengers with a knife and wounded them before being shot and killed, ABC News reported, citing Reuters.
ABC News, citing police, reported that the attacker wanted to leave Belize and was looking for more fuel for the plane.
He was shot by a passenger on the plane who was carrying a licensed firearm, it is alleged.
Police did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.
According to ABC and other reports, authorities have identified the kidnapper as U.S. citizen Akinyela Savo Taylor.
There were 14 passengers on the plane, including Taylor and another American, ABC reported.
The plane landed back in Belize after circling during the hijacking, and nearly ran out of fuel, reports said, citing police.
The U.S. Embassy in Belize did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
