The United States (US) and Russia voted against a United Nations (UN) resolution condemning "Russian aggression against Ukraine", Montenegro voted in favor, while Serbia abstained from voting, the Croatian website Indeks reported last night.
The US, Russia and seven other countries voted against a UN General Assembly resolution on cooperation with the Council of Europe, which condemns "the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine".
The resolution entitled "Cooperation between the UN and regional and other organisations: cooperation between the UN and the Council of Europe" was adopted with 103 votes in favour and nine against.
45 countries, including Serbia, abstained from voting, reported Indeks.
The resolution repeatedly explicitly referred to Russian aggression against Ukraine and stressed that Europe was facing "unprecedented challenges following the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, and before that against Georgia."
The text mentions work on establishing a special tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.
During the vote, US representatives opposed the text, arguing that the wording in the resolution did not contribute to progress towards peace, while Russian diplomats deemed the text unacceptable.
In addition to the US and Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea, Mali, Niger, Nicaragua and Sudan were also against, and all members of the European Union voted in favor.
From the region, Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina voted in favor of the resolution, while North Macedonia abstained, as did Serbia.
