The United States is optimistic that it can bring an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine, US Vice President J.D. Vance said on Friday as he met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni for the second time in 24 hours, Reuters reported.
Vance met with Meloni in Washington on Thursday, and the two then flew to the Italian capital ahead of the Easter holidays.
"I want to update the prime minister on some of the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine... even in the last 24 hours, we think we have some interesting things to report," Vance told reporters sitting next to Meloni.
"Since there are negotiations, I won't prejudge them, but we feel optimistic that we can, hopefully, bring this war, this very brutal war, to an end," he added.
A few hours earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that US President Donald Trump would abandon attempts to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine within days unless there were clear signs that an agreement could be reached.
