Ecuador is on alert over an alleged plot to assassinate recently re-elected President Daniel Noboa, authorities in the Latin American country announced today.
Leaked military intelligence reports, claiming that assassins entering Ecuador from Mexico and other countries are planning to carry out "terrorist attacks" against the head of state, circulated on social media this Sunday.
"We strongly condemn and reject any attempt to assassinate the President of the Republic, state bodies or civil servants," the Ecuadorian government said in a statement today.
Ecuador is "on alert," the statement added, blaming the alleged assassination attempt on "criminal organizations linked to political entities that lost the elections."
Noboa won the presidential election in a runoff on Sunday, but his leftist rival Luisa Gonzalez accused him of committing "grotesque electoral fraud."
