The customs service of the African country of Zambia announced today that it had arrested an Indian national who tried to take more than two million dollars in cash and half a million dollars in gold out of the country through the Lusaka airport.
The 27-year-old man was travelling to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates when he was arrested by customs officers at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka, the Drug Enforcement Commission said.
He was caught with $2,3 million in cash and $500.000 worth of gold, the Commission said.
Footage broadcast by local media shows stacks of hundred-dollar bills wrapped in rubber bands, packed in a bag that was placed in a suitcase.
"The investigation is continuing and those involved in transnational organized crime will soon be brought to justice," the statement added.
Zambia has large mineral reserves, particularly copper and gold, but 60 percent of its population lives in poverty, according to the World Bank.
