Chinese leader Xi Jinping said today that tariffs are "damaging" multilateral trade, Chinese state media reported.
Xi made the remarks during a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who is on an official visit to Beijing.
"Tariffs harm the multilateral trading system and destabilize the world economic order," Xi said.
US President Donald Trump has imposed a 145% tariff on most products coming from China, which has retaliated by imposing its own 125% tariff on US products.
Aliyev is in Beijing with the aim of setting a new course for bilateral relations, according to Chinese state media.
Relations with Azerbaijan, which is at the crossroads of Asia and Europe, are important to Beijing, especially as part of the "Belt and Road" initiative, which aims to strengthen Chinese influence in the world.
Xi Jinping said today that the two countries maintain close ties "despite the ever-changing international situation."
