A small police plane crashed near a popular resort in Thailand, killing five of the six people on board, authorities there said this morning, the AP reported.

The plane was on a test flight in preparation for parachute training in Hua Hin district before it crashed around 8 a.m. local time, said Thai police spokesman Arshayon Kraitong.

Officials did not immediately say what model of aircraft it was, but footage suggests it was a twin-engine Viking DHC-6 Twin Otter, AP reports.

The plane crashed near Hua Hin airport, officials said.

Footage shows the plane in the sea about 100 metres from the coast, its fuselage appearing to be broken in two.

There were six people on board the aircraft, all of them police officers, the spokesman said.

Authorities have begun examining the black box to determine the cause of the small plane's crash, AFP reported.

Footage posted on social media shows the plane spiraling down before crashing into the sea, as well as people trying to reach the crash site.
