At least 15 people have died in a fire at a hotel in Kolkata, in northeastern India, police there said today.
"Several people have been rescued from the rooms and from the roof of the hotel. The fire that broke out last night is now under control. At least 15 people have died," Kolkata Police Chief Manoj Verma told reporters.

Building fires are common in India due to a lack of equipment to prevent them and widespread disregard for safety regulations.
Indian media reported footage of hotels in flames and people trying to escape through windows.
One person died after "jumping off a terrace trying to escape," the media added.
