India said it had attacked nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistani Kashmir, and Pakistan said at least three people were killed and 12 injured, according to initial reports.
Pakistan vows to respond to attacks
The offensive, Reuters reports, came amid heightened tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors following an attack on Hindu tourists in Indian Kashmir last month.
Pakistan said India launched missiles at three locations, but the Indian government statement did not detail the nature of the strikes.
"The Indian armed forces have just launched Operation Sindh, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir from where terrorist attacks on India were planned and directed," the Indian statement said.
"Our actions were focused, measured and non-escalating in nature. No Pakistani military installations were targeted. India showed considerable restraint in the choice of targets and methods of execution," the statement said.
A Pakistani military spokesman told Geo television that Pakistan's response was ongoing, without giving details. The spokesman said five sites, including two mosques, had been hit, and reported three dead and 12 injured. The blasts caused a power outage in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani Kashmir, witnesses said.
Witnesses and a police officer at two locations on the border in Indian Kashmir said they heard loud explosions and intense artillery shelling, as well as jets in the air.
India has blamed Pakistan for last month's violence in which 26 men were killed and vowed to respond. Pakistan has denied any involvement in the killings and said it has intelligence that India is planning an attack.
After the Indian strikes, the Indian Army wrote in a post on X Network, "Justice has been served."
