Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today that the release of an Israeli-American hostage announced by the Palestinian movement Hamas will not lead to a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip or the release of Palestinian prisoners.
Netanyahu, on the contrary, reiterated that negotiations on an agreement that would secure the release of all hostages still held in Gaza would be conducted "under fire" and that his country was still preparing for "an intensification of fighting."
Following talks with US officials about a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian movement Hamas announced on Sunday that it would release Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander, who has been held in the Palestinian territory since an attack on October 7, 2023.
No date was given, but the hostage's family said on Sunday they had been informed that 21-year-old Edan Alexander was expected to be released "in the coming days."
"Israel has not committed to any ceasefire or to the release of terrorists (Palestinian prisoners they hold), but only to a safe corridor that allows for the release of Eden," Netanyahu said.
According to him, the expected release of the only living hostage with American citizenship was made possible thanks to Israeli "military pressure" in the Gaza Strip.
"We are in the midst of decisive days, during which a proposal has been presented to Hamas that allows for the release of our hostages. Negotiations will continue under fire, with preparations for an intensification of fighting," the Israeli prime minister added.

The Israeli army, which resumed its offensive against the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip on March 18 after a two-month ceasefire, has not yet commented.
