A Russian fighter jet flew within two meters of a US military plane over the Baltic Sea, Fox News reported, citing US military officials.
"A Russian plane flew past an American reconnaissance plane in the Baltic Sea area on Monday," the statement said, adding that the distance between the two planes was about 1,5 meters.
Since June 2, there have been more than 35 interactions in the Baltic Sea region between US and Russian aircraft and ships, but yesterday's incident is significant because the US military has designated it as risky.
The incident came a day after the Russian Foreign Ministry said it would treat any flight by US aircraft west of the Euphrates River as a threat, and it was unclear how close the US plane flew to Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave between Poland and NATO ally Lithuania.
US forces have not commented on this incident.
