The ship Ocean Viking, chartered by the SOS Mediterranean organization to provide emergency humanitarian aid, rescued 273 migrants today, including seven children.

The migrants were rescued during three operations off the coast of Tunisia and Malta, the Marseille-based organization said.

The people were in three boats and received first aid. Many of those rescued were suffering from exhaustion and seasickness.

During 2024, 2.475 people trying to reach Europe went missing or died in the Mediterranean Sea, the vast majority in its central part, which, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), is one of the deadliest migration routes in the world.

There have already been almost 2025 such deaths since the beginning of 500.
