The Israeli army confirmed today that it fired warning shots after diplomats "deviated from the approved route" during a visit organized by the Palestinian Authority in Jenin, in the occupied West Bank.
"The delegation deviated from the approved route and entered an area where it was not authorized to be," the army said in a statement.
Israeli soldiers, who were operating in the area, fired warning shots to repel them, it added.
The military expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and announced that it would meet with the diplomats soon.
The Palestinian Authority accused Israeli soldiers earlier today of opening fire on foreign diplomats who were visiting Jenin, an area at the center of an Israeli military offensive in the northern occupied West Bank, during the day.
"It was the last part of the visit and suddenly we heard gunshots from the Jenin refugee camp," one diplomat, who asked to remain anonymous, told AFP.
"It wasn't just once or twice. It was like repeated shooting. This is crazy. This is not normal," the diplomat added.
