On May 21, the Iranian parliament ratified a twenty-year comprehensive strategic partnership agreement between Iran and Russia, which aims to strengthen political, military and economic ties between the two countries.
"The parliamentarians adopted the general provisions and details of the draft comprehensive strategic partnership agreement between Iran and Russia," the IRNA news agency reported, AFP reported.
Russian lawmakers had already ratified the text in April, which envisages greater cooperation between Moscow and Tehran in addressing "common security threats."
However, the text is not a mutual defense agreement, like the one signed last year by Russia and North Korea.
The Iranian-Russian document stipulates that if one side is the victim of aggression, "the other will not provide assistance to the aggressor."
The agreement also envisages strengthening military cooperation between Iran and Russia, two countries that are targets of Western sanctions and share a common desire to counter what they describe as American hegemony.
Western countries accuse Iran of supplying drones and short-range missiles to Russia for its war against Ukraine.
The agreement also aims to strengthen economic and political ties between Moscow and Tehran, particularly in the areas of energy, finance and the fight against terrorism.
The text of the agreement was signed in January by Iranian President Masoud Peshmerga and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, during the Iranian president's visit to Russia.
