United States Vice President J.D. Vance told graduates of the Naval Academy in Annapolis that US President Donald Trump is working to ensure that US troops intervene abroad only if there are clear objectives, instead of going, as in the past, on "undefined missions" and into "open-ended conflicts."
In his opening remarks to the academics, Vance specified that Trump's approach "doesn't mean we ignore threats, it means we approach them in a disciplined manner, so if we're going to send you to war, we're doing it with a very defined set of goals in mind."
Vance said that under Trump, rapid-fire strikes like the one in Yemen against the Houthi rebel movement would be carried out.
Trump ordered their positions to be bombed, and then stopped the strikes - with an uncertain effect, the AP estimates.
"That's how military power should be used," Vance said. "Resolutely and with a clear purpose."
