United States President Donald Trump said that Russian President Vladimir Putin told him "very clearly" in a phone call today that he would respond to Ukraine's drone attack on Russian airfields, which the White House claims America did not know was going to happen.
There has been no progress in efforts to halt the war hostilities between Moscow and Kiev, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected Russia's proposal for a ceasefire.
Trump announced on social media that his conversation with Putin was long, and that it was "a good conversation, but not one that would lead directly to peace."
The US, led by Trump, is seeking to stop the war that began with Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
The US president did not say how he reacted to Putin's promise to respond to Ukraine's bold attack on targets deep inside Russia, but his announcement did not contain a shred of recent frustration with Putin, when Trump begged him to stop the war and, among other things, wrote that the Russian leader had "absolutely gone crazy."
The US President, however, did not support the joint proposal by Republicans and Democrats to impose new sanctions on Putin.
Trump said he also discussed Iran's nuclear program with the Russian president.
It is not known whether Trump plans to speak with Zelensky, who has called the Russian ceasefire proposal an "ultimatum" and repeated his demand to speak directly with Putin. Putin, however, has refused and was furious today over what he called Ukrainian "terrorist" attacks on Russian railways in Kursk and Bryansk.
Kremlin: Putin-Trump conversation was positive and productive
The Kremlin described today's phone call between Putin and Trump as "positive and productive," adding that they agreed to "remain in constant contact."
"After the talks, the two leaders described the exchange of views as positive and quite productive and confirmed their readiness to remain in constant contact," said Putin's diplomatic adviser Yuri Ushakov.
He added that Trump told Putin that he was not informed in advance of the major Ukrainian drone attack that recently hit military airfields in Russia.
"The topic of attacks on military airfields was also discussed. Moreover, Trump emphasized that the American side was not informed in advance," Ushakov said.
