United States President Donald Trump has vetoed an Israeli plan to assassinate Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in recent days, two US officials told Reuters today.
"Have the Iranians killed an American yet? No. Until they do, we can't even talk about attacking the political leadership," said one of the sources, a senior US administration official.
The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said senior US officials have been in constant communication with Israeli officials in the days since Israel launched a massive attack on Iran in an attempt to halt its nuclear program.
They said the Israelis reported that they had the opportunity to assassinate the Iranian supreme leader, but that Trump waved them off.
Officials did not say whether Trump himself delivered the message. But Trump has been in frequent communication with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
When asked about the Reuters report, Netanyahu said in an interview with Fox News television channel today: "There are so many false reports about talks that never happened, and I'm not going to get into that."
"But I can tell you, I think we are doing what we need to do, we will do what we need to do. And I think the US knows what is good for the US," Netanyahu said.
Trump had hoped to resume US-Iranian talks on Tehran's nuclear program. Talks scheduled for today in Oman were canceled due to the attack.
Trump told Reuters on Friday that "we know everything" about the Israeli attacks.
