At least 38 people were killed today in a shooting at food distribution centers in the southern Gaza Strip, the local health ministry said.
Today's attack is the deadliest yet, and shootings occur almost daily as Palestinians pass through the area under Israeli military control to reach food centers, supported by Israel and the United States (US), and run by the private company "Gaza Humanitarian Foundation" (GHF).
Eyewitnesses said that the Israeli army began firing today to control the crowd.
The Gaza Health Ministry said most of those killed were trying to reach a food center near the southern town of Rafah, and that several were also on their way to a newly opened center near the nearby town of Khan Younis.
The military has designated special routes for access to food centers, and the GHF has warned people that leaving these routes is dangerous, although many do so to get to the food first.
Israel and the US argue that the new food supply system is needed to prevent Hamas from abusing the aid.
UN agencies have rejected the new aid system, saying it fails to meet the territory's needs and allows Israel to use aid as a weapon.
Palestinian health officials say dozens of people have been killed and hundreds injured since the food centers opened in May.
