IAEA: Team of inspectors leaves Iran

A team of inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) left Iran today and returned to its headquarters in Vienna after Tehran suspended cooperation with the United Nations (UN) agency, the IAEA announced on the X platform.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi reiterated the "key importance" of discussing with Iran the modalities for resuming "essential monitoring and verification activities" as soon as possible.

Iran on Wednesday suspended cooperation with the UN nuclear safety agency, while Tehran has repeatedly leveled accusations against the IAEA, especially after the recent Israeli and American bombing of its nuclear facilities.

The decision has angered Israel, Iran's enemy since the Islamic Revolution in 1979. The suspension of cooperation was condemned by Germany and the United States (US), while the UN described it as "worrying".

Israel attacked Iran on June 13, claiming that the country was close to developing nuclear weapons. Israel attacked hundreds of nuclear and military facilities, and the US then bombed three of the country's largest nuclear facilities.

Iran, which denies it wants an atomic bomb and defends its right to enrich uranium for civilian purposes, has responded with missile and drone attacks on Israel.

Tehran joined the Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1970 and on Thursday reaffirmed its commitment to the agreement.

Iranian law does not specify what specific measures could lead to the suspension of its cooperation with the IAEA, whose inspectors have not had access to Iran's uranium stockpiles since June 10.
