"Who cares about Epstein's papers," podcaster Megyn Kelly asked a sold-out audience at the Turning Point Summit, a major conservative activist conference in Florida. During the election campaign, Donald Trump claimed that high-ranking politicians and businessmen, as clients of Jeffrey Epstein, abused minors and that he, as president, would make it public.
But the US Justice Department will not release new documents related to the Epstein case, saying they simply do not exist, White House spokeswoman Carolyn Levitt said last week. Some materials are being withheld because they are too brutal to release. The alleged "client list" from Epstein's sex abuse network, however, is not among them, the US government says.
They say everything has been thoroughly investigated and the results have already been published. Justice Minister Pam Bondi did not want to comment on additional questions about this on Tuesday, July 15th.
Trump's base is disappointed
The failure to release the scandalous details from the prosecutor's office's files has left Trump's base disappointed. Ultraconservative influencers such as Laura Loomer, Steve Bannon, Brandon Tatum and Marjorie Taylor Greene have previously criticized Trump's foreign policy and high government spending. Now the Epstein case is becoming a new point of contention between the Trump administration and its political foundation - the "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) movement.
Charges against Chief Prosecutor Bondi
Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson warns about this in a podcast with colleague Alex Clark: If Trump starts to look like someone who covers up the crimes of the powerful, it could mark the end of his political mission. Carlson says he sees the blame for this in Attorney General Pam Bondi. After the election, she, according to him, created the wrong impression that she had thousands of videos of Epstein and his business associates.
Opposition Democrats continue to pressure Republicans through congressional demands for the release of all Epstein files. Although Republicans blocked such a request by a majority vote in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson himself called for the full release of all Epstein documents from the Justice Department shortly thereafter in an interview.
Johnson calls for "transparency"
"I'm all for transparency," Johnson said in an interview with conservative podcaster Benny Johnson. "We need to put everything out there and let people make their own judgments." He also called on Bondi to clarify some of the ambiguities in his statements about the Epstein affair.
Former government adviser Elon Musk is further heating up the political atmosphere with a series of online posts on the topic. President Trump, on the other hand, is calling for unity among his party and voters.
Trump: "The material is dirty, but boring"
Trump said in Washington on Tuesday that he doesn't understand his supporters' fascination with the Epstein case. He knows the material and, as he puts it, it is "dirty, but boring."
Conspiracy theories and promises of transparency about alleged secret networks within the American state helped Donald Trump reach the White House. Now it's all about to come back to haunt him. Both him and his party.
