Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that United States President Donald Trump's announcement to impose an additional 50 percent tariff on Brazil represents "unacceptable blackmail."
In a speech broadcast on national television, Lula said that "certain Brazilian politicians" who support Trump's threats against Latin America's largest economy are "traitors to the homeland."
"Brazil has only one owner - the Brazilian people," he added.
On July 9, the US president announced additional tariffs of 50 percent on Brazilian exports.
In a letter to his Brazilian counterpart, published on the Truth Social platform, Trump yesterday called on the current Brazilian government to "stop attacking" former President Jair Bolsonaro.
On trial for the attempted coup, Bolsonaro, who was president from 2019 to 2022, faces up to 40 years in prison.
Prosecutors on Tuesday asked that he be convicted of "coup d'état."
