Brazil's former far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, has been ordered to wear a leg brace, the country's authorities announced today, calling it "the ultimate humiliation."
The decision comes as federal police search his home and party headquarters in Brasilia, in accordance with an order from Brazil's Supreme Court.
Bolsonaro is now prohibited from leaving his house overnight, from communicating with foreign ambassadors and diplomats, and from approaching foreign embassies.
The former president is also banned from using social media and from contacting other people under investigation by the Supreme Court, which includes his son Eduardo Bolsonaro - a Brazilian lawmaker currently living in the US and with close ties to US President Donald Trump.
Bolsonaro is on trial before the Supreme Court on suspicion of leading a conspiracy to carry out a coup with the aim of remaining in power, that is, to overturn the results of the 2022 elections in which he was defeated by the current, leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Using a play on words with the name of the court before which he is being tried, Bolsonaro told reporters in Brasilia, after the imposition of the ban, that the new decision had inflicted "supreme (i.e. supreme) humiliation" on him, because he had allegedly "never thought about leaving Brazil" and "going to an embassy."
"These precautions were introduced precisely for that reason," he said.
The decision is part of a separate investigation into Eduardo Bolsonaro for allegedly working with US authorities to impose sanctions on Brazilian officials.
