US President Donald Trump announced that the man who attacked members of Congress during baseball practice today has died as a result of his injuries. Trump said the gunman who shot Republican Congressional Majority Leader Steve Scalise has died. Scalise was seriously wounded, but is now in stable condition, the US president said. The attacker was identified as James Hodgkinson, 66, a building inspector from Illinois. Scalise was at a baseball training session for members of Congress in Alexandria, Virginia, a few kilometers from Washington, when he opened fire on those present. Several other people were wounded in the incident, including two policemen. The police initially announced that the attacker had been arrested.
Trump praised the police officers for their "heroic actions". Trump called for unity after the wounding of a Republican congressman. In a televised statement from the White House, Trump said that political parties can have disagreements, but they should remember that everyone who serves in Washington is there because they love the United States. He said that everyone can agree that we are "blessed to be Americans" and that we are strongest when we "work together, for the good of all."
