A flash flood that triggered a torrent of mud has hit a town in the Himalayan region of northern India, killing four people and leaving around 100 missing, authorities there said today.
"It is a serious situation... We have received reports of four deaths and around 100 missing. We pray for their safety," said state defence minister Sanjay Seth.
Videos carried by Indian media show torrents of mud and water sweeping away residential buildings in Darali, a tourist destination in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.
The Indian army said 150 soldiers on the scene helped rescue about 20 survivors from the landslide.
The Indian Meteorological Department had issued an earlier warning for heavy rains in Uttarakhand.
Deadly floods and landslides are common during India's monsoon season from June to September. Experts say climate change is increasing their intensity and frequency.
