US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose new tariffs and export restrictions on countries he says are targeting US technology companies.
"Taxes or laws on digital services, as well as regulations on digital markets, are all designed to discriminate against or harm American technology," Trump wrote late last night on his Truth Social platform.
His statement appears to be aimed at European countries and organizations that have passed laws regulating the rules of the internet.
The European Union has the Digital Markets Act and the Digital Services Act, which deal with competition and content moderation.
The United Kingdom is also introducing a digital services tax.
If these "discriminatory measures" are not removed, Trump did not rule out the possibility of introducing "significant additional tariffs" on products from these countries or imposing export restrictions on American technology and chips.
"America and American technology companies are no longer the 'piggy bank' or the 'doormat' of the world," the US president added.
Trump canceled trade talks with Canada in June in response to Ottawa's planned digital services tax, which targets American multinationals such as Alphabet, Amazon and Meta. Canada announced it was canceling the measure shortly after.
