Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said today that the spokesman for the armed wing of the Palestinian movement Hamas was "eliminated" in the Gaza Strip in an Israeli military strike.
"Hamas terrorist spokesman Abu Obeida was eliminated in Gaza and joined others eliminated from the axis of evil of Iran, Lebanon and Yemen and is now in the depths of hell," Katz wrote on the social network X.
Hamas, against which Israel is at war in the Gaza Strip, has not reacted so far.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier today confirmed that an attack had been carried out on a spokesman for Hamas' armed wing, known as Abu Obeida, but could not confirm whether he was alive or dead.
In a statement ahead of Sunday's cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said at the time that an attack had been carried out on the Hamas spokesman.
"I hope he is no longer with us, but I point out that there is no one on the Hamas side to shed light on this issue," Netanyahu said, his office reported.
Last night, the Israeli military announced that "an attack was carried out on a key Hamas terrorist in Gaza City," without specifying his identity, but Israeli media reported that it was Abu Obeida.
