An Indonesian diplomat was shot dead in the Peruvian capital as he rode his bicycle to his apartment building, police said today.
Zetro Leonardo Purba (40), who was an employee at the Indonesian Embassy in Lima, was shot three times on Monday evening.
Police released footage from two surveillance cameras showing a person wearing a helmet shooting the diplomat twice, who then falls and the attacker shoots him a third time and flees on a motorcycle driven by another person.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono called in a statement for a "thorough, transparent and swift investigation and for the maximum possible protection of diplomatic personnel and Indonesian citizens in Peru."
Peru's Foreign Ministry said the murder would be "thoroughly investigated and that the Indonesian ambassador and embassy staff would be provided with all necessary assistance and protection."
The government of President Dino Boluarte is struggling to respond to a rise in murders and extortion in Peru.
Official data shows that 6.041 people have been killed this year through mid-August, the highest number since 2017. The number of extortion reports from January to July was 15.989, a 28 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024.
