Hezbollah will not give up its weapons, one of the movement's lawmakers said today, a day after the Lebanese government announced it would soon implement a plan to disarm the pro-Iranian movement.
Under heavy pressure from the US and fears of intensifying Israeli bombing in Lebanon, Nawaf Salam's government in August ordered the military to develop a plan to disarm Hezbollah by the end of the year.
After a cabinet meeting on Friday dedicated to the issue, the government announced that the Lebanese army would begin implementing the plan, without giving other details or a timeframe.
Hezbollah "will not give up its weapons under any circumstances, or under any pretext," Hezbollah MP Hassan Ezzedine said, according to Lebanese news agency ANI.
Hezbollah, founded and financed by Iran, a sworn enemy of Israel, rejected the decision, although it was significantly weakened after the war against Israel in 2024, which destroyed part of its arsenal and decimated its leadership.
