Authorities in the United States have no suspect in custody for the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, after hours of contradictory statements from officials about the killing at the University of Utah.
"This shooting remains an active investigation," the Utah Department of Public Safety said, adding that it is working with the FBI, the Utah County Attorney's Office, Utah County sheriffs and local police departments.
After two suspects were detained and released, "the investigation and search for the attacker are ongoing," the statement said.
Kirk, 31, was shot while addressing an audience at the University of Utah Valley, near Salt Lake City.
A statement from the Department of Public Safety said the shooting was believed to have been a "targeted attack" from the roof of a building, but did not provide further details "to protect the investigation."
Governor Spencer Cox said at the start of a press conference that police were questioning a "person of interest," while Bowe Mason, commissioner of the Utah Department of Public Safety, said at the same conference that the perpetrator, who is suspected of firing one shot, is still "at large."
FBI Director Kesh Patel said an unnamed person was taken in for questioning and then released. "Our investigation continues," he wrote on social media.
