Australia will invest $12 billion (6,8 billion euros) to equip one of its shipyards to build a fleet of nuclear submarines, the government in Canberra announced today.

The 12 billion Australian dollars will be spent over ten years to renovate and improve the capacity of the Henderson shipyard, near Perth in Western Australia, said Defence Minister Richard Marles.

In 2021, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States signed the Aukus agreement, which aims to counter China's growing influence in the Asia-Pacific region.

Marls told Sky News that the Henderson shipyard is a key part of the Aukus deal.

"It's about what Australia needs to do to seize this strategic opportunity," the defense minister added.
