US President Donald Trump has announced that he will designate the Antifa movement, a generic term for far-left groups that claim to be anti-fascist, as a "terrorist" organization.
Trump announced the decision a week after the murder of Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, one of the most influential right-wing youth groups in the US.
"I am pleased to inform our many patriotic Americans that I am designating the Antifa movement, a sick and dangerous radical leftist disaster, as a terrorist organization," the US president said on his Truth Social network.
Trump, who is currently on a state visit to the UK, said he would "also strongly recommend that those who fund the Antifa movement be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the highest legal standards and practices."
The White House announced earlier this week that it intends to crack down on what it calls leftist "domestic terrorism," following the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
