Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva criticized today, at the United Nations General Assembly session, the "antidemocratic forces" attacking institutions, emphasizing that Brazil sent a message to the world by condemning former President Jair Bolsonaro and his predecessor for the attempted coup.
"Around the world, anti-democratic forces are trying to subjugate institutions and suppress freedoms," said Lula da Silva, who also condemned "interference" in Brazil's internal affairs.
US President Donald Trump and his administration have been pressuring Brazilian authorities for several months, calling the proceedings against former President Jair Bolsonaro, an ally of the US president, a "witch hunt".
Speaking immediately after the Brazilian leader, Trump said the two had agreed to meet next week.
Lula da Silva said Brazil had sent a message to the world condemning Bolsonaro for plotting to overthrow the government.
"Brazil has sent a message to all ambitious autocrats and those who support them: our democracy and sovereignty are not negotiable," he said.
On September 11, Brazil's Supreme Court sentenced Bolsonaro to 27 years in prison after a historic trial that found him guilty of conspiring to maintain power after his electoral defeat by the incumbent leftist president in 2022.
