Five people were killed today in a 6,9-magnitude earthquake that struck the central Philippines, local police said.
"We have five confirmed deaths," police said without giving further details.
A strong earthquake, with a magnitude of 6,9, struck under the sea off the central Philippine Islands today, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The Philippine Institute of Seismology warned of possible "minor sea level shifts" and urged residents of the central islands of Leyte, Cebu and Biliran to "stay away from the coasts."
The epicenter of the earthquake was 11 kilometers east-southeast of Calape, a municipality in Bohol province with a population of about 33.000.
The Philippines has frequent seismic activity because it is on the Pacific volcanic "Ring of Fire."
