At least 91 students are believed to be trapped in concrete rubble two days after an Islamic school building collapsed in Indonesia, authorities said after reviewing attendance records and reports from worried families of the missing.

The Disaster Management Agency revised the number of people it believes are trapped under the rubble to 91 late last night, from a previous 38.

More than 300 rescuers are working around the clock to free survivors.

The building collapsed on Monday as hundreds of people, mostly boys, were attending afternoon prayers in the prayer hall of an Islamic school in East Java province. The school was undergoing illegal construction work to expand it.

At least three students were confirmed dead and 100 were injured, many of whom suffered head injuries and broken bones.

The disaster management agency said at least six children were alive under the rubble, but the search was being hampered by large concrete blocks and other unstable and heavy parts of the building. All rescue equipment was on standby, but was not being used for fear it could cause further collapse.

Rescuers are delivering oxygen, water and food through narrow passages to those still under the rubble to keep them alive.

The students are mostly boys aged 12 to 18. The girls were praying in another part of the building and managed to escape, survivors said.

According to authorities, the two-story building had unstable foundations and could not withstand the weight of the addition of two additional floors, which was done without a permit.
