Mexican authorities announced that they have arrested former national football player Omar Bravo (45) on suspicion of sexually assaulting a minor, CNN reports.
The Jalisco state prosecutor's office said in a statement that the investigation indicates that Bravo allegedly abused the teenage girl several times in recent months, and there is suspicion that he has committed similar acts in the past.
He was arrested during an operation in the municipality of Zapopan, and is expected to appear in court soon.
Bravo rose to fame as a striker for Chivas de Guadalajara, where he became the club's all-time leading scorer. He also played for the Mexican national team at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
On his Instagram account, fans commented on his latest post from September 8, which made no mention of the allegations. Some expressed sadness, while others emphasized that he was still their idol and that they hoped the allegations were not true.
The prosecution announced that it is continuing the investigation.
