The First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump, stated that she has established an open line of communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the repatriation of children affected by the war in Ukraine, and that some children have already been returned to their families, while others will soon be reunited with their loved ones.
"This is still an ongoing process," Melania Trump told reporters at the White House. She said Putin responded to her letter earlier this year and they have remained in touch.
"President Putin and I have an open channel of communication on the well-being of these children," the first lady said. "Over the past months, both sides have participated in several informal meetings and telephone conversations."
The first lady added that her representative is working directly with Putin's team to ensure the safe reunification of children with their families between Russia and Ukraine, Reuters reports.
According to her, eight children have been returned to their families in the last 24 hours.
US President Donald Trump has expressed frustration in recent weeks that the war in Ukraine has not yet ended, recalling that he had promised during the campaign that he could end it within a day.
