The Hamas delegation will not participate in the signing of a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, a member of the militant Palestinian group's political bureau said today.
"As for the official signing, we will not be present," official Hossam Badran told Agence France-Presse (AFP).
He added that Hamas acted "through Qatari and Egyptian intermediaries" during the new ceasefire negotiations with Israel.
Badran also told AFP that he believes the idea, in US President Donald Trump's peace plan, that members of the movement leave Gaza is absurd.
He said that "talk about expelling Palestinians from their land, whether they are members of Hamas or not, is absurd and meaningless."
"Hamas leaders in the Gaza Strip are on their land, the land where they lived, with their families and their people. Therefore, it is natural for them to stay there," Badran said.
Another Hamas official said today that the group's disarmament is "out of the question," even though it is provided for in a 20-point agreement brokered by the United States and proposed by its President Donald Trump.
According to the agreement, Hamas should release 48 hostages, or hand over their remains to Israel, by Monday morning, and Jerusalem should in return release 250 prisoners arrested "for security reasons", as well as 1.700 Palestinians who have been detained by the army in the Gaza Strip since the start of the war in October 2023.
