Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said today that the Israeli army will destroy all Hamas tunnels in the Gaza Strip after the release of hostages held in that Palestinian territory.
On the third day of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, Katz stressed in a statement that the operations would be carried out within the framework of an "international mechanism, under the supervision of the United States of America (US)."
"The big challenge for Israel after the hostage-return phase will be the destruction of all Hamas terror tunnels in Gaza," Katz said, adding that he had ordered the army to prepare for that mission.
Hamas has a network of tunnels under the Gaza Strip, which are used in particular by its armed wing.
Israel claims to have destroyed many of them during more than two years of war, which was sparked by an Islamist movement's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
