The Pentagon announced today that it will send an aircraft carrier to South American waters, the latest escalation in the buildup of US military forces in the region.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the USS Gerald R. Ford and its strike group to deploy to the Southern Command to "strengthen the US capacity to detect, track and disrupt unlawful actors and activities that threaten the security and prosperity of the United States," Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said on social media.
The carrier "USS Ford" is currently deployed in the Mediterranean Sea along with three destroyers.
It takes several days for these ships to reach South America.
The US military has carried out its tenth attack in the Caribbean Sea on a ship suspected of smuggling drugs, Hegseth said also today, blaming the Tren de Aragua drug cartel for operating the ship.
Six people died in the attack.
