The Israeli military announced today that the chief military prosecutor, General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, submitted her resignation this morning to Chief of General Staff Eyal Zamir, the army said in a statement, without giving a reason for her resignation.
According to the text of her resignation, which was reported by the media today, the prosecutor admits that her service provided the media with a video of soldiers abusing Palestinian prisoners in 2024 at the Sde Tejman detention center in southern Israel.
The Israeli military has launched an investigation into the leak of the video to the media, and Defense Minister Israel Katz welcomed the prosecutor's resignation.
In February, as Israel waged war against the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in Gaza, the announcement of the arrest and indictment of five soldiers sparked outrage in the military and among some Israeli politicians.
According to the indictment, the soldiers "acted against the detainee with extreme violence" and inflicted "serious injuries," including cracked ribs and a punctured lung, the military said in February.
The Sde Tejman detention center at the military base is intended to detain Palestinians arrested primarily in the Gaza Strip after the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, which began on October 7, 2023, with an attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement on Israeli soil.
Palestinian prisoners' rights organizations regularly accuse the Israeli prison administration of abusing Palestinian prisoners.
