At least 21 people have died and more than 30 are missing in western Kenya after landslides triggered by torrential rains on Friday, Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said today.
"We have suspended our search and rescue operations for today," but they will resume tomorrow, Murkomen wrote on the X platform.
The minister urged residents living near rivers and areas that experienced landslides last night to move to safer locations.
Murkomen said 25 people with serious injuries were airlifted by helicopter to the western Kenyan town of Eldoret.
The Kenya Red Cross released aerial footage of the region showing large landslides. It said it was coordinating rescue efforts with the government, including helicopters to evacuate the injured.
"Access to some of the affected areas remains extremely difficult due to flooding and blocked roads," the Red Cross said.
Last year, the rainy season, exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon, had deadly consequences in eastern Africa, in Kenya, but also in neighboring Tanzania, Ethiopia and Uganda.
