US official: Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps planned assassination of Israeli ambassador to Mexico

"The plan has been halted and does not pose an immediate threat. This is just the latest in a long history of Iran's global targeted elimination of diplomats, journalists, dissidents and anyone who disagrees with them, which should be deeply concerning to any country where there is an Iranian presence," the official told Reuters.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had been planning to assassinate the Israeli ambassador to Mexico since late last year, but the attempt was thwarted and there is currently no threat, a US official said on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the plan against Ambassador Einat Kranz Neiger was active until the first half of this year.

"The plan has been halted and does not pose an immediate threat. This is just the latest in a long history of Iran's global targeted elimination of diplomats, journalists, dissidents and anyone who disagrees with them, which should be deeply concerning to any country where there is an Iranian presence," the official told Reuters.

The official declined to say how the plan was thwarted or provide further details about the operation.

Iran's mission to the United Nations (UN) in New York declined to comment.

The United States (US) and its allies have often accused Iran and its allies of attempting to launch violent attacks against Tehran's opponents.

Security services in the UK and Sweden warned last year that Tehran was using criminal allies to carry out violent attacks in those countries, while London said it had halted 20 Iran-linked plots since 2022.

A total of 12 other countries condemned what they said was an increase in assassinations, kidnappings and intimidation carried out by Iranian intelligence services.

The director of Britain's domestic intelligence service MI5, Ken McCallum, said last month that Iran was "frustratingly" trying to silence its critics around the world, citing Australia's exposure of Iranian involvement in anti-Semitic plots and Dutch authorities' exposure of a failed assassination attempt.

Israel has long been a target of Iran, especially after the Israelis entered an air war with Iran, which included US bombers attacking Iranian nuclear sites in June.
