The senior commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Hossein Salami, assessed yesterday that the Israelis "will have nowhere to run but to the sea" in the event of an Iranian strike, Israeli media reported.
Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman warned against such an attempt, saying Israel had never been better prepared for a general armed conflict.
"The finger is on the trigger and the rockets are ready at any moment the enemy does something against us and we will fire them," Brigadier General Salami said in Tehran before the traditional Friday noon prayer for Muslims.
He added that Iran knows Israel very well, which he said is very vulnerable due to its narrow territory, and is surrounded on all sides, referring to Syria and Lebanon to the north and the Mediterranean Sea to the west.
"Do not rely on your military bases because they are within range and we can attack them to prevent them," said an Iranian officer, assessing that the resistance to Israel is much stronger than before and that it should not place its hopes in the US and Great Britain for he will be gone before the allies arrive to help him.
During a visit to the south of Israel near the Gaza Strip, Lieberman responded to those threats, saying that neither the Israeli army nor the state of Israel should be tested.
"We are ready for any scenario. There has never been such readiness and will both in the army and among the people of Israel," he said.
The latest tension between the two hostile countries erupted after an airstrike on a Syrian military base on April 9 killed 14 people, including seven Iranians.
Iran, Syria and Russia have accused Israel of the attack, which the country has not acknowledged. An allegedly upgraded Iranian air defense system that was recently installed was attacked.
